Small business and the self-talk thing

I started my small business in 1989, after being downsized for the second time 2 years. It would be incorrect to say I was undercapitalized because that would assume I had any capital. What I had was two teenagers and two mortgages. So I was highly motivated – but no capital.

In the first couple of years I actually did pretty well in getting my business off the ground. But my new venture just wasn’t mature enough to generate income adequate to fund my growing business AND family. Consequently, there were times when I grew discouraged and impatient with my business and in my self-talk – you know, when I would “have a word with myself” – I questioned the viability of my business model.

After a while I finally realized that it wasn’t my business’ fault that its owner had started it without enough capital. I had to cut my business – and myself – some slack and learn how to talk to myself more productively.

What I learned is that when things are out of my control, like when the economy slows down, or if my business just isn’t old enough to feed a family of four and itself, I shouldn’t beat myself up about that. Of course I should be tough on myself about things that I can control, like working hard enough, smart enough and practicing good business fundamentals. But when it comes to things out of my control, I should cut myself some slack. Productive self-talk can result when this differentiation is made.

As you deal with the current economic challenges, as you conduct self-talk, be sure to differentiate between what you can control and what you cannot control. Recently I talked about this on my small business radio program, The Small Business Advocate Show. If you would like to get better at positive self-talk, take a few minutes to listen. And it you feel so led, leave a thought of your own in the comments section.
