Small business operating fundamentals during a slow economy.

During a slowing economy, one of the most difficult decisions a small business owner must make is to cut back on expenses. Oh, it’s not so tough to decide not to buy something; it’s making the permanent cuts that are the most difficult, like ending a contract with another business owner. And of course, the most difficult: letting an employee go, especially if the reason is not a performance issue, but due to a downturn in business.

The default position every business owner must take, however, is that steps have to be taken, in a timely manner, to make sure that the business survives.

So if you’re having difficulty making these expense-cutting decisions, don’t think you’re alone; you’re one of literally millions of business owners facing the same challenge. But it might help to hear what Brain Trust member Eva Rosenberg, author of “Small Business Taxes Made Easy,” and I talked about on my radio program today, because we talked about cutting expenses and she provided a few valuable tips on this topic. Listen in and if you want, leave your expense-cutting ideas and other thoughts in the comments section.
