Enjoy the whole trip

The richest person is the one who is contented with what he has. - Robert C. Savage

I like that statement, but I can see how it would trouble those who are goal-oriented.

It’s important to have goals. But if you are goal-oriented, that almost precludes being contented with what you have, doesn’t it? So how do you reconcile Mr. Savage’s sage observation with being goal-oriented? I think you do it by recognizing success in many different forms in your life.

You say, “I want to grow my company to $3 million in sales within three years.” Good for you.

But while you’re reaching for that next rung, are you recognizing that there are some pretty cool things to be appreciated about the rung you are on? Don’t forget that just creating an organization that can realistically plan for such a goal is a pretty darn good success story.

Are you enjoying your current success, or has your impatience made you miss that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? Don’t be so anxious to reach the finish line. Remember, the operative word in that phrase is “finish.”

Life is short. Enjoy the whole trip, including all of the stops.
