RESULTS: How concerned are you about potential business damage due to racial tensions?

The Question:
How concerned are you about potential damage to your business due to racial tensions?

35% - Not concerned at all
49% - Not concerned in my market, but upset about owners who’ve been harmed
14% - Somewhat concerned and upset about owners who’ve been harmed
3% - Very concerned - if it can happen in Ferguson, it can happen here
Jim’s Comments:
As you can see, while most of us aren’t worried about being looted by racially-charged protesters, we do have empathy for those who’ve been harmed.

But we’ve got to stop acting like America has made no progress with race relations in the past half-century every time a single altercation happens. In America, where the rule of law is supposed to replace anarchy, how does what happened between Mr. Brown and Officer Wilson justify the destruction of neighborhood small businesses?

And shame on national leaders whose words and behavior give grievance-merchants license to incite riots that make collateral damage of innocent people, including Main Street business owners.

Many times in this space I have the pleasure of quoting smart people who have said something that I want you to hear. Eugene Griessman is such a person, and a long-time friend and member of my Brain Trust. Gene’s thoughts are oft quoted, but one piece he wrote caught on so much that, for almost 10 years, it continues to pop up around the globe.  It’s called The Diversity Creed, and with all of the intolerance in the world right now, I thought you would appreciate this piece of Griessman wisdom, and I offer it with Gene’s permission.

I believe that diversity is a part of the natural order of things-as natural as the trillion shapes and shades of the flowers of spring or the leaves of autumn.

I believe that diversity brings new solutions to an ever-changing environment, and that sameness is not only uninteresting but limiting.

To deny diversity is to deny life-with all its richness and manifold opportunities.  Thus, I affirm my citizenship in a world of diversity, and with it the responsibility to…

Be tolerant.  Live and let live.  Understand that those who cause no harm should not be feared, ridiculed, or harmed-even if they are different.

Look for the best in others.

Be just in my dealings with poor and rich, weak and strong, and whenever possible to defend the young, the old, the frail, the defenseless.

Avoid needless conflicts and diversions, but be always willing to change for the better that which can be changed.

Seek knowledge in order to know what can be changed, as well as what cannot be changed.

Forge alliances with others who love liberty and justice.

Be kind, remembering how fragile the human spirit is.

Live the examined life, subjecting my motives and actions to the scrutiny of mind and heart so to rise above prejudice and hatred.

Care.  Be generous in thought, word, and purse.

Your small business diversity strategy.

Having a diverse employee roll in a small business has always been the right thing to do. But one of the things that has become evident in the marketplace in the past couple of decades is that, beyond the right thing, diversity in an organization is a management best practice. And now, in the 21st century, there are brand new diversity motivators which have broadened the definition of having a diverse team.

Can we stipulate that any small business without an online presence is a dinosaur waiting to become extinct? Thank you. And “on-line” now means more than just a website; it includes e-marketing and social networking. So that means part of your diversity strategy must include input from at least one person under the age of 30, and probably someone under 25.

Such was the topic of conversation today with long-time Brain Trust member, Gene Griessman, author of “The Words Lincoln Lived By,” on my radio program, The Small Business Advocate Show.
